Chetan Maini’s passion for sustainable mobility started 30 years ago, when he was part of the University of Michigan Solar Car team that stood first in the race across the US and came third in the World Solar Challenge in Australia. Since then, he has been relentlessly working on making electric vehicles affordable. Chetan launched ‘Reva’, India’s most affordable electric car, which went on to become the world’s best-selling electric car at one point of time, selling in over 24 countries. In 2013 (then Mahindra Reva), it reached new heights when it was named one of the Top 50 Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company magazine.

In 2017, Uday Khemka, promoter of the SUN Group, and Chetan Maini joined hands to realize their shared vision of making electric mobility affordable and accessible to the masses, and formed SUN Mobility. The company is a joint venture between the Maini Group and the SUN Group. This partnership brings together the synergies of the Maini Group, a diversified engineering powerhouse providing solutions for intra-campus electric mobility, material handling, aerospace, and automotive precision products, and the SUN Group, which has global investments across a wide range of sectors such as energy (oil and gas), mining, renewable energy, and new energy storage applications.

SUN Mobility collaborates across the ecosystem with vehicle manufacturers (OEMs), battery cell technology providers, fleet operators and aggregators, energy infrastructure companies (Discoms and oil and gas players), and cities, enabling quicker adoption of our solution and accelerating the transition to large-scale EV adoption.

At the heart of SUN Mobility is a simple idea: separate the battery from the vehicle. Our Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model lets drivers and fleet operators buy the vehicle without the battery, then pay only for the energy they use. A depleted battery is exchanged for a fully charged one at a Swap Point in a matter of minutes, roughly the time it takes to refuel a conventional vehicle.

Our integrated ecosystem brings together three elements:

• Smart Batteries: modular, IoT-connected, globally interoperable battery packs built on an open architecture that works across multiple OEMs and vehicle types.
• Quick Interchange Stations (QIS) and Swap Points: a dense, high-throughput network of stations, including sites at Indian Oil retail outlets, where energy is replenished in minutes.
• Smart Network: a cloud-based platform that manages charging, battery health, and energy delivery, allowing batteries to be charged during off-peak hours or when renewable energy is most available.

This approach lowers the up-front cost of going electric, removes charging downtime, extends battery life through professional management, and gives operators predictable energy costs.

Micromobility (Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, and Small Commercial Vehicles)

SUN Mobility’s foundation is in electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and small commercial vehicles under two tonnes, the segments driving India’s fastest EV growth. Powering over 125,000 vehicles and completing more than 1.5 million swaps every month, this business has made SUN Mobility India’s leading open-architecture battery swapping provider, serving last-mile delivery fleets, ride-hailing operators, and individual drivers.

Heavy Electric Vehicles (HEV) Business

SUN Mobility’s HEV business extends proven battery swapping technology to buses and trucks, targeting the segment that contributes disproportionately to India’s transport emissions. Led by CEO Ashok Agarwal, the business is building an integrated ecosystem of modular smart batteries, high-throughput Quick Interchange Stations, and the cloud-based Smart Network so that heavy vehicles can replenish energy in minutes, eliminating charging downtime, reducing range anxiety, and improving fleet productivity.

Key highlights of the HEV business:

• World’s first Modular Multi-Battery Swappable Solution. At Prawaas 5.0 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat (July 2026), India’s largest bus and mobility exhibition, SUN Mobility unveiled the world’s first modular multi-battery swappable solution, showcased on the Tata Starbus 12-metre EV platform.
• Broad vehicle coverage. The platform supports buses from 7 to 13.5 metres and trucks from 3 tonne to 55 tonne GVW, allowing operators to run multi-OEM fleets on a common energy infrastructure.
• Rapid swapping. The modular architecture allows two battery packs to be swapped simultaneously in under five minutes, with 50 kWh and 100 kWh configurations.
• Industry-first certification. In 2026, the HEV platform received the industry’s first AIS-038 certification for an indigenously developed and designed swappable high-voltage battery platform for truck and bus applications, awarded by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
• Proven heritage. The journey began in 2019 with India’s first swappable battery system for buses, and has since evolved into a comprehensive high-voltage ecosystem.
• Compelling economics. The solution can reduce the upfront cost of an electric bus by around 40 percent, bringing it in line with conventional ICE buses, while lowering operating costs for fleet operators by up to 20 percent.
• Strong IP position. The HEV business is backed by SUN Mobility’s overall portfolio of 475+ IP filings.
• Market opportunity. The HEV business is aimed at decarbonizing India’s roughly USD 12 billion commercial bus market at scale, supported by policy tailwinds such as PM E-Drive and state-level procurement targets.

SUN Mobility is taking its proven, made-in-India model to emerging markets where the need for affordable, clean mobility is most urgent.

• Africa. SUN Mobility is deploying what is set to become Africa’s largest battery swapping network, beginning in Kenya and leveraging its partnership with Vivo Energy, Africa’s largest fuel retailer. Africa’s two-wheeler and three-wheeler market is projected to exceed 1.9 million vehicles annually by 2030, and these small vehicles account for roughly 5 percent of the continent’s carbon emissions today, making battery swapping a timely, cost-effective route to electrification.
• Southeast Asia. The company is expanding across Southeast Asia, starting with the Philippines, extending its interoperable battery platform and Swap Point network into the region.

Across these markets, the expansion targets an under-developed part of the e-mobility supply chain, from local battery production to quick-interchange stations, creating jobs and building a resilient clean-mobility ecosystem.

SUN Mobility’s infrastructure-led model has attracted a roster of strategic global investors:

• Bosch (2019): the global technology leader acquired a stake in SUN Mobility, bringing capital and automotive expertise to accelerate product development and OEM integration.
• Vitol (2021): a USD 50 million investment from one of the world’s largest energy and commodities companies, and the parent of Vivo Energy, supported the expansion of SUN Mobility’s swapping infrastructure across India and select international markets.
• Indian Oil Corporation (2024): SUN Mobility entered a landmark 50:50 joint venture with IOCL, named Indofast Swap Energy Pvt. Ltd., to scale the Battery-as-a-Service model nationwide across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and light commercial vehicles under two tonnes, with plans to integrate solar energy into swap station operations.
• Helios Climate and PIDG (2025): a landmark USD 60 million round led by Helios Climate, Africa’s premier climate-focused investment platform, in partnership with the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) through InfraCo Asia, backing the launch of Africa’s largest battery swapping network and continued domestic growth.

Landmark Investment from Helios Climate and PIDG (2025)

In July 2025, Helios Climate, Africa’s premier climate-focused investment platform, in partnership with the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) through InfraCo Asia, led a landmark USD 60 million investment in SUN Mobility. This round brings the total capital raised by the company over the preceding year to approximately USD 135 million.

The capital will drive the launch of Africa’s largest battery swapping network while continuing to fuel SUN Mobility’s domestic growth. The PIDG investment alone is expected to help fund the production of more than 232,000 batteries, enable the adoption of more than 138,000 electric vehicles, and roll out more than 2,000 Quick Interchange Stations across Africa and Southeast Asia, avoiding an estimated 164,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions.
